Welcome to Perspectives off the Page, a place where I discuss, analyze, and appreciate the great writings of the past, while encouraging writers of all ages to write better stories in the present and the future. Here you'll encounter my discoveries about the craft of writing, the creative process, and the God I serve and joyfully write about. So keep reading and keep writing because there's more to the story than meets the eye.
Joel Ryan is as much a storyteller as he is a lover of great tales and those who tell them. With an MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults, Joel has taken his love for the craft of writing into many creative arenas, from the Walt Disney Company and ICON Productions to academia and the church. As a novelist, former screenwriter, writing professor, and contributing writer for various theological publications, he is committed to protecting the family and preserving Christian values, biblical truth, and the great stories of history by discussing why they work (or don't) and why they matter. In doing so, it is Joel's heart to help writers of all ages and disciplines find the right words to tell stories only they can tell and tell them well.
